Question
I have a Kienzle Mantle Clock that belonged to my father not sure of the model but was made around 1950, on the front of the clock are the winding spots one of which it seems is stuck or wound extremely tight, I was wondering what the three winding spots were for. I know one is to wind the clock up, another is for the chimes but the one that is stuck I have no idea what it is used for, but would like to find out, also I would like to know if it would be expensive to get it fixed.
Answer
The springs for a Kienzle mantle will be as follows-
Right=1/4 hr. chime, center=time, left=hour strike. If the spring on the left seems to stay wound when the other two wind down then the clock is failing to strike. This will usually occur when conditions with the movement get to the point that a particular function cannot get enough power through the movement to keep operating. Most likely a thourough cleaning and overhaul may be needed. As to how expensive it will be depends on the rates in your area and your definition of expensive.
